Long time, no update

27 Jun

All is well here in pipe land. There hasn’t been much to post since things haven’t really changed all that much.

A Stanwell pipe filled with Orlik Golden Sliced is the way to go, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Sure, I’m still trying out other blends and come across something interesting from time to time, but I keep going back to OGS.

my-pipes.net is the community site that I have run for a few years now. It’s still going strong, and the daily active user base is growing. It’s not going a mile a minute, but that would be a little too much at once anyway.

Some things to consider: Buy more tobacco and support the farmers. Write your congressman or whatever it’s called where you are. Make sure they can’t ignore you. If you don’t want tobacco taxes, you need to make yourself heard. Share. When you smoke a pipe, let the rest of the world know. That will get more people interested in the pipe which in turn will support the farmers as well.

I’m working on some new articles, but they’re still somewhere out in the far distant future it would seem.

Expanding my horizon – Part II

01 Apr

I took a chance with my first order of snuff and I have been thoroughly impressed. With me snuff lasts forever, so for me it’s a cheap form of tobacco enjoyment. There’s a decent nicotine kick in the drier snuffs and the flavors are sublime. Truly excellent stuff.

During the past couple of weeks, I have been listening to the advice from others as well as listening to the experiences they’ve had. All of this has resulted in yet another snuff order, that I placed just a few moments ago.

The order is as follows:

1 x Wilsons Tom Buck (Extra Strong SP) Snuff

1 x Fribourg & Treyer High Dry Toast Snuff

1 x Wilsons Irish High Toast No.22

1 x Wilsons Sharrow Irish D High Toast Snuff

1 x SP No. 1 Snuff Small Tin

1 x SP Snuff Kendal

1 x Wilsons Best SP Snuff

1 x Wilsons SP 100 Snuff

2 x Lowenprise Snuff

1 x Raspberry Snuff

1 x Red Bull Snuff

1 x Robby’s Top Mint Snuff

1 x Strawberry Snuff Kendal

1 x Samuel Gawith Raspberry Snuff

High Dry Toast and SP type snuffs have been recommended across the board as something one simply can’t go without, so obviously I have ordered some of that.

Expanding my horizon

15 Mar

Nothing pipe related about this post – and then again, maybe a little bit. Just to try something a little different, a friend of mine mentioned that I should explore another avenue in the ways of tobacco consumption, namely nasal snuff.

At first I was a bit apprehensive about this idea based on my snus experiences, but after doing a little bit of studying on the subject I concluded that I simply had to give it a try. As a result I have placed an order with an online retailer who carries a number of popular blends in this new, to me, world of tobacco.

My order ended up looking like this:

1 x Irish ‘D’ Snuff Kendal
1 x Molens A/P Snuff
1 x Molens Oranje Snuff
1 x Molens Latakia Ao 1860 Snuff
1 x President Snuff
1 x Fribourg & Treyer Macouba Snuff
1 x Silver Metal Snuff Spoon
1 x Snuff Dispenser Original Perspex
1 x Packard’s Club Snuff

The Molens brand has been mentioned by many pipe smokers as a wonderful supplement to the pipe.

With smoking bans popping up all over the place, there is no doubt that snuff and snus producers are experiencing increased sales, and just recently, snuff has made itself known among younger people (along with the pipe). However, I doubt the pipe is gaining the same popularity as the snuff is.

World class stress relief

13 Mar

When your normal work week is never less than 50 hours, an amount of stress is likely to build up – especially if you’re in a line of work, like me, where you have several deadlines to meet. As soon as a deadline has been met, another one is right behind it. It’s a never ending thing.

That’s probably a scenario a lot of people can recognize – and we all know the many different ways people choose to deal with it. A lot of misguided souls turn to alcohol – possibly even something worse. Others chain smoke cigarettes or gorge on food. I have my own way of dealing with it – the pipe.

This bites!

12 Mar

You don’t have to be an Internet surfing pipe smoker (or perhaps smoker of pipes?) for long, before you start hearing stories about tongue bite. You, yourself will most likely have experienced it first hand on a number of occasions, if not frequently. Tongue bite is as natural in pipe smoking as the pipes are themselves. There seems to be a bit of confusion about what causes tongue bite, and until someone decides to do a medical study on the matter, it will probably stay that way. I will take some time to put a few things in perspective and hopefully demystify at least part of the phenomenon.

Put that in your jar and store it!

11 Mar

Now that Justin made a blog post about this, and Chris followed up with an MPC post, I thought I would touch on this subject as well – just to feel like I’m a part of the in-crowd. I will not make any points on the stackability (it’s my word, leave me alone) of certain types of jars, nor will I attempt to shed any light on what kind of seal is better. I will simply stick to what I use and leave it up to you, dear reader, to figure out what you prefer.

I would much rather touch on the topics of WHY?, WHAT? and HOW MUCH?. Those three questions pop up from time to time, but rarely make it outside the topic that concern the jars themselves. That’s really a shame, so I will take that ball and run with it. If I make it to the end, I’ll celebrate with a bowl of something or other in a pipe yet to be determined. How’s that for needless information? Alright – let’s begin.

What gets you fired up?

10 Mar

Everybody has an opinion about which is better, and everybody will have made a choice at some point about which they prefer. Common for all, they need to apply some sort of flame to their tobacco – otherwise most of the enjoyment from pipe smoking will fall to the ground. It would be a little stupid walking down the street with a bowl full of tobacco and no way to enjoy it. I wouldn’t recommend using it as chew, but hey – some people like that kind of thing.

Back in the stone ages, when rocks and possibly the rubbing of two sticks to make fire were about as practical as an albatross, we still managed to tame the wild beast we now call fire. You would think we would have progressed immensely since then, but you would be wrong. Although we have made it slightly easier, we still like the idea of sticks and stones (friction really) to get things fired up.

Copenhagen Pipe Show 2008

09 Mar

I was meaning to write a lengthy report on this show, but only 2 hours into the thing I had to leave. I managed to settle a bill with my regular pipe dealer, as well as pick up a number of “new” pipes.

So rather than going on and on about a pipe show I nearly didn’t get to attend, I will just list all the new pipes I got.

Enjoy

The trick to smoking flakes

04 Mar

navy flake cut The title is misleading as there really is no trick to smoking flakes at all. As long as you are able to keep the damn leaf lit, you’re golden. However … Over the years, people have come up with all kinds of ways to approach the magnificent flake and how to make it burn. I’ll touch base on a few of these ways and hopefully give you an idea about how to tame this beast (seriously, it’s easy – I’m just messin’ with ya’). If you care to read on, I’m sure some things will become more clear. If you can make your flakes burn just fine, then just read for the entertainment value, however insignificant.
